Sony’s Hirai stated that the goal is to beat out the last gen console. The PS2 managed to sell a record of 140 million consoles during its run.

Hirai spoke with the Financial Times, stating “I want to try to see if we can exceed the PS2 numbers after nine years, otherwise why are we in this business?”

Sony has a ways to go, as they have yet to even sell 20 million PS3 consoles as the system is nearly 2 years old.

Analysts believe that their ability to reach their sales target will depend largely on the price of the console over time.
