Microsoft has announced that starting this Friday, they are going to drop the price of the Xbox 360 Arcade console from $249 to $199.  This will make it cheaper than the Nintendo Wii by an amount of $50, and could boost sales in a big way.

This makes the Xbox 360 the first next-generation console to hit the $199 price point, lower than both the PS3 and Nintendo Wii.

On top of that, the Xbox 360 Pro console with the 60GB hard drive will now be priced at $299, while the Xbox 360 Elite will be priced at $399.

No word as to whether or not the Nintendo Wii or Sony PS3 will get similar price cuts.
