September 8, 2008
Washington (ChattahBox) - Google will soon be getting some new images for Google Maps and Google Earth, as the GeoEye-1 Earth imaging satellite launched over the weekend.
The GeoEye-1 Earth imaging satellite is the highest resolution commercial Earth imaging satellite to date, and was built with a team made up of the U.S. National Geospatial Agency’s NextView program, among other supporters.
The cost of the new satellite was said to be $502 million, and has been touted for its images for quite some time.
In the coming months, the satellte is going to provide Google with images for Google Earth, and Google Maps services.
The resolution, to put it into perspective, will be double what is possible in the current GeoEye satellite.
