Conficker worm didn’t turn but attack still may happen

April 2, 2009

(ChattahBox) — The Conficker computer virus, which has infected several million computers since November, was seen as a dud as its much-anticipated update Wednesday, April 1, didn’t seem to cause any damage. But the question remains was it April fools or just biding of time?  After seeking new instructions beginning yesterday the newly refreshed Conficker computer worm, is still a potential ticking bomb. The security community, has up until now  been able to block communication with its parent domains, but with it’s now changed domain generation algorithm (thanks to the update) it now can open up unfettered communication to up to 50,000 potential newly generated domains. The latest variant, Conficker C, now has the ability to contact its command and control centers for further instructions while circumventing interference. Not to make too much of the situation, security experts say that consumers who have up-to-date antivirus software are at little risk from Conficker and that most businesses deal with similar threats every week. But at the same time despite the collective sighs of relief when nothing appeared to happen yesterday, Conficker’s authors can still apparently very much in control.

For an amazing antivirus software (that runs a free virus scan) is Cyberdefender. If it finds a virus you have to buy an upgrade, but it is so worth it! I don’t think my computer is safe without it!
