Classmates.com Sends Email From “New” Member: A Dead Woman, Murdered in 1992

April 26, 2009

(ChattahBox)—The 1983 graduating class of Westfield High School in Omaha, Nebraska, is up in arms over a recent email sent to members from Classmates.com, announcing a newly registered alum from its class. The problem is, the woman who supposedly registered at the site, Mary Cronin, was brutally murdered in 1992, her case remaining unsolved to this day. Unless she registered from her grave, it wasn’t Mary. Class members who received the email were sickened and horrified, thinking it some sort of malicious prank and complained to Classmates.com.

Just about everyone have had their inboxes filled with email blasts promoting Classmates.com, this time however, the email took on an ominous tone to those class members who knew the former Mary Cronin and the savage details of her murder. The subject line of their inbox read:“Remember Mary Cronin? Say hi to the newest class of ’83 alum to join.”

Mary disappeared in 1992 just a year shy of her ten year high school class reunion. Her skull and part of her remains were found a year later in a lonely Nebraskan field. Police had little to go on and the case sits in a dusty cold case file.

Former class members of Mary are shocked that a reputable site like Classmates.com, doesn’t have safeguards in place to ensure the identity of the person registering. After numerous complaints from members who received the email, Classmates.com removed Mary’s profile from its site, but did not say it planned to change how it operates its site.

Classmates.com spokesperson Scott Matulis said, “Classmates regrets any pain caused to Mary’s family and friends. Mary’s sign up could have been a mistake during a user’s search or it’s malicious.”

Mary’s former classmates believe it is indeed malicious, perhaps the work of Mary’s killer. Who else would be so sick as to register a murdered woman on a site that connects former High School classmates? Some of Mary’s classmates are considering filing a complaint with the office of the Nebraska Attorney General.

Meanwhile, maybe this latest shocking event may prompt Omaha police to reopen Mary Cronin’s cold case file, issuing a subpoena to Classmates.com to obtain computer records of the person responsible for registering under Mary’s name. Perhaps the information obtained may lead to Mary’s killer, putting her unsolved case to rest, offering her family and former classmates some peace.

Classmates.com, friendfinder.com, adultfriendfinder.com, onlinebootycall.com and most of that ilk send fake “do you know this new member?” emails. Fraud is part of their business model.
