Latest Apple Rumor: Will the New iPhone Replace Camcorders?

May 3, 2009

(ChattahBox)—According to the Washington Post and BusinessWeek, Apple is busy at work developing video capability into its new iPhone 3.0, complete with advanced software for editing. The new iPhone release is said to offer portable camcorder capabilities, allowing users to shoot video, edit it, view it on the iPhone’s generous sized screen and easily share it with friends, perhaps with wireless MMS support.

This of course, is all breathless speculation at this point, with no official statements coming from Apple management. The Post article suggests Apple is developing its iPhone camcorder features in secret. Peter Burrows of BusinessWeek believes “we’re about six weeks away from the next big thing,” a pronouncement he bases on his “gut,” an unnamed source and Apple’s silence regarding video in its March iPhone 3.0 advance preview.

Mr. Burrows may be on to something, as many mobile devices already have video capability, namely Windows Mobile and BlackBerry. Additionally, Google’s Android is about to launch a new software update, called “cupcake” enabling T-Mobile G1s to record video.

The iPhone, despite being a great device, only has photo capability. It makes sense a new release would offer video recording. However, to also replicate all the editing functions of a traditional camcorder into an iPhone device is a tall order, but if it can be done, Apple would certainly be the company to make it happen.

There are always Apple rumors right before the company appears at a major conference and is ready to release a new product update. Apple is due to attend the Worldwide Developers Conference in June, and is expected to roll out the iPhone 3.0.

Based on the March iPhone 3.0 preview, we do know the new iPhone will have 100 new features, including a copy, cut and paste feature, MMS support, file sharing, peer to peer Blu-tooth support and advanced SDK features. No mention of video.

As we near closer to the June launch of the iPhone 3.0, the rumors and speculation will intensify to such an extent, we may be hearing soon the next iPhone will be capable of detecting distant missives from alien life, light years away or that it will transform into a spaceship.

Could a full-featured iPhone camcorder be next on the horizon? We all will just have to wait until June to find out.
