Microsoft Ready to Launch Free Anti-Virus Software
June 11, 2009
(ChattahBox)—Microsoft is set to launch a free anti-virus software program intended to run on personal computers. The anti-virus program is currently tagged with the code-name Morro, intended as a nod to Brazil’s Morro de Sao Paolo Beach.
Whatever Microsoft plans to name it when it’s officially unveiled, personal computer owners can certainly use another free anti-virus option to choose from.
The two main players in the anti-virus industry, Symantec and McAfee are watching this new development. However, Microsoft’s new anti-virus service shouldn’t make much of a dent in the sales of the more advanced security suites offered by Symantec and McAfee.
Microsoft described Morro as a basic anti-virus program, intended to detect and remove viruses, spyware, rootkits and trojans. More advanced features, like encryption and firewall protection would not be offered.
Microsoft entered the retail anti-virus market three years ago, with Live OneCare, but it wasn’t successful. This new free virus scan is thought to be a version of the previous Live OneCare product
Morro is more likely to be compared to the free home version of the anti-virus software offered by Avast, which offers a basic scan for viruses and spyware, as well as a resident shield and daily automatic updates.
Microsoft’s Morro is expected to be made available as a beta-trial version on its website soon, with a full launch planned for the end of the year.

Good for consumers. Bad for Norton and McAfee…
