‘Fangirl’ Fanaticism May Lead To New Skills?

June 18, 2009

North Dakota (ChattahBox) – Many of us online are not new to the idea of fandom, where fans of various anime, TV series, movies, books, and other entertainment gather on the Internet to create fanfiction, fan-made videos, fanart, and other tributes. But, as it turns out, there may be more benefit than many thought.

Professor Elizabeth Birmingham of North Dakota State University has come up with a theory as to how ‘fan-vids’ can be used to help further education.

“Girls have created this subculture where they cut the animation videos up, mix them around, and create their own stories, often romances,” she was Birmingham was quoted as saying on the UC Davis news site.

She believes that through encouraging this subculture, an interest in literature, as well as in media formats like film editing, might be increased. She also feels that there may be a connection made between these videos and feminism, as a large majority of these videos are made by young women between the teen and early adult years.

Birmingham is especially interested in how it translates into the highly popular genre of ‘slash’, where romance is written between two male characters, which may or may not be homosexual in canon.

“I’m interested in why straight teenage girls are interested in this sexuality,” she explained.
