Universal Cell Phone Chargers Are on Their Way

June 30, 2009

(ChattahBox)—It’s been talked about for a long time and now a universal mobile phone charger is becoming a reality, as a group of major phone manufacturers start rolling out new phones designed to operate with universal chargers by the end of next year.

The welcome change came, because of an initiative developed by the Group Special Mobile Association (GSMA) to set a goal for all manufacturers to adapt their phones to operate on one generic charger.

The GSMA’s plan calls for all mobile phone manufacturers to adopt a universal charging standard by the year 2012. Phone manufacturers, such as Apple, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, LG, NEC, Qualcomm have joined the group and agreed to the plan.

Manufacturers will begin rolling out the new phones, first in Europe. Eventually, new phones will no longer come packaged with their own charger.

Consumers will now have to purchase a universal charger, but the convenience of having just one charger for every phone will win consumers over.

Soon, a lost charger would not be cause for alarm, leaving you with a dead phone and without a means of communication, until you are able to find your specific manufacturer’s phone charger.

The universal chargers would be designed as micro USB devices, which would in theory, easily plug into any phone.
