New Aircraft Uses Solar Power, Can Remain In Sky For Five Years
August 21, 2009
US (ChattahBox) – Aurora Flight Sciences, in corporation with BAE Systems, CS Draper Laboratory, and Sierra Nevada Corporation, has developed a Z-wing surveillance craft that not only utilizes solar power, but will be capable of remaining in the air for up to five years at a time.
The Odysseus aircraft is almost 500-feet in length, and can fold into a Z shape in order to better capture solar rays, which will provide it’s energy reserves.
The use of the craft isn’t set in stone, and Aurora claims it will have a number of benefits.
Floating at around 60,000 feet or higher, it can be used for climate research and weather monitoring, surveillance, or communications.
The design has been completed, and a prototype at 50% of the size is set to be created. Aurora hopes that a full size prototype will be completed within five years.

They could also use this as refueling station. It’s amazing what solar power technology could do now a days.
