World of Warcraft Addict Enters 12-Step Program

August 21, 2009

(ChattahBox)–A new Internet Addiction Recovery Program just opened its doors in a country non-tech setting not far from computer giant Microsoft in Washington state, and the facility’s first patient is a teenager addicted to the multi-user video game, World of Warcraft. Once there, the teenager must go cold turkey from gaming and complete a 45-day detox program to reconnect to the real world.

The Internet detox center, named reStart is the first of its kind in the United States. The facility operates much like a traditional 12-step rehabilitation program offering, group therapy, life-skills coaching, cooperative living and weekly, off-site, high-adventure expeditions.

The reStart facility is situated on five woodsy acres, complete with a tree house retreat to commune with nature and unplug from the Internet. The unique program is specially designed to help Internet and video game addicts overcome their dependence on gaming, gambling, chatting, texting and other aspects of Internet addiction.

It’s estimated that about 10 percent of the online population may be addicted, with gamers playing multi-user games, like World of Warcraft at increased risk for developing an unhealthy addiction.

A 45-day stay at the 6-bed facility costs $14,500, but may be well worth it for true Internet addicts who are unable to live a normal life away from their computers.

But I’m sure they give them a break so they can continue to raid with their guilds…

It’s enlightening to know that there’s really a rehabilitation program for video game addiction. Cliche as it may sound but prevention is still better than cure. I think it’s just a matter of discipline. Video games are suppose to give fun and entertainment. And keep in mind that everything in moderation will do us no harm.

This sounds just like one of the subjects of a recent documentary i watched.

One of the segments in “Second Skin” followed one man’s tale of his battle with online game addiction. You can pick up the DVD now, apparently. I’d recommend it for anyone trying to understand the kinds of people who play MMO’s, or who may be struggling with online addiction.
