Compact Nuclear Reactors Gain Prominence In Japan

October 25, 2009

Japan (ChattahBox) – Toshiba Corp. has announced plans to begin developing small nuclear reactors to sell to developing countries.

The current designs show a compact reactor that allows a full 10,000 kilowatts of energy despite it’s minuscule size. It is made to minimize the amount of focus and maintenance that has to be applied to nuclear projects, offering a simple way to monitor and control them.

It is a concept that is becoming increasingly popular in the country, as two other competing companies have announced their own reactors.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. has created their own reactor that can generate up to 350,000 kilowatts, and Hitachi Ltd. has come up with one that can generate up to 600,000, though neither model are as compact.

Southeast Asia is the main target for sales, though authorization for sales is being sought in the United States.
