Origin of Viral Facebook Bra Color Status a Mystery
January 10, 2010
(ChattahBox)—Everyone is doing it, and everyone is all abuzz about the recent phenomenon of posting bra colors, as Facebook status updates. The single words, black, pink, nude, blue and many others are popping up on female users’ Facebook pages. And now it’s reached viral status. By Sunday, the search phrase “color status on Facebook” was nearing the top 10 on Google Trends and climbing. What’s it all about? The colors refer to colors of bras and the activity is meant to raise awareness for breast cancer.
But the origins of posting random colors as Facebook updates remains murky. It might have started in Detroit of all places, or perhaps in Britain. Wherever it started, it’s gaining Internet traction and it’s seen as an example of the power of social networking.
According to ABC News, the Detroit Free Press is claiming that Motor City is where the colors for breast cancer campaign began. Others say it first started across the pond in the UK. As evidence of the UK connection, people are pointing to a chain e-mail using the British spelling colour:
“Some fun is going on….just write the colour of your bra in your status..just the colour, nothing else, and send this on to ONLY girls no men… it will be neat to see if this will spread the wings of cancer awareness. It will be fun to see how long it takes before the men will wonder why all the girls have a color in their status…thanks ladies!”
Regardless of the origin of the phenomenon, breast cancer research organizations are pleased with the campaign to raise awareness for a disease that strikes 1 in 8 women in the United States, and kills about 40,480 women a year.
