U.S. Confirms Military Action Is Possible Following Cyber Attacks
May 13, 2010
James Miller, undersecretary of defense for policy at the Pentagon, answered questions from RAW about the possibility of a military operation being used in response to a cyber attack.
Yes, we need to think about the potential for responses that are not limited to the cyber domain … Over the past decade, we’ve seen the frequency and the sophistication of intrusions into our networks increase. Our systems are probed thousands of times a day.”
Cyber terrorism, crime, espionage and sabotage are becoming increasingly dangerous forms of attack as the Internet becomes a more intricate part of every day life.
In response, Lieutenant General Keith Alexander of the NSA has been selected to head a new branch of the Pentagon that will be responsible for fighting the threat on a more organized scale.
Not only will it be used as a defensive organization, but they will be using the new agency as a platform for launching full offensive operations, most likely related to International terrorism threats.
