Apple to Announce Plans For Release of the iPhone on the Verizon Network?
June 29, 2010
(ChattahBox) – Good news for Verizon customers: sources at Apple have told Bloomberg News that there are plans in the works to offer the iPhone in the Verizon network, after years of single-company loyalty to AT&T.
The move is far from unexpected, in many ways.
AT&T has struggled to maintain demand for service, and while they have been working to improve their networks, users of the iPhone’s 3rd and 4th generations are far from happy with the dropped calls, bad reception, and service outages that are common in larger areas.
Now that the company is dropping their unlimited data plans, many iPhone users would be happy to switch to a new network that provides more reliable service, while AT&T loyalists would like to see less strain on the existing networks.
The anonymous sources familiar with the project say that a release of a Verizon partnership is due as early as January 2011, and it couldn’t come at a better time.
With the iPhone 4 having just seen record breaking sales, and demand expected to grow in the Fall when the rest of the world sees its’ release, reliable service on an expanded market will be needed.
Whether or not Apple will choose to come up with a specific device to make it compatible, or just some form of software update that will give it the ability to work with Verizon, is yet to be seen.
