Facebook Skin-Whitener App for India Promises ‘Fairer’ Profile Pic

The product named, “Vaseline Men be Prepared,” promises to “Transform Your Face On Facebook” with a fairer complexion, also free of pimples. The advertising campaign is spearheaded by an image of Bollywood actor Shahid Kapur, with one half of his face whitened by the face cream.
Skin-whitening creams have been marketed to Indian women for years, but manufacturers just recently began to also target the insecurity and social prejudices of men. Indian society places a premium on the lighter complexions sported by the higher caste of Brahmins.
