Google acquires Metaweb to improve question based search query results

July 17, 2010

(ChattahBox) – Search giant Google announced Friday, it has acquired Metaweb, a San Francisco based company that maintains an open database of “things,” and their relationships to one another, in a move to better handle certain search results.  Terms of the deal were not disclosed.  Metaweb’s database currently includes some 12 million items, including places, notable people, companies, and movies , the company claims.  Currently, Google Search displays answers to simple questions — such as “What time is it in …?” — at the top of its results page, instead of forcing users to click on a link to go to another site. The acquisiton will help Google Search answer more of these specific questions, using Metaweb’s database to deliver the answers in its results.  Google product management chief Jack Menzel explained in a blog post, how some queries to the Google search algorithm would return more relevant results as a result of the company’s technology:

“What about ‘colleges on the west coast with tuition under $30,000′ or ‘actors over 40 who have won at least one Oscar?’ These are hard questions, and we’ve acquired Metaweb because we believe working together we’ll be able to provide better answers.”
