Is a Facebook Phone On The Horizon?
September 19, 2010
(ChattahBox Technology News) – Facebook is working with a third-party manufacturer to create the first social media-centric phone, a source familiar with the alleged project has claimed in an interview with TechCrunch.
For months there has been speculation as to why Matthew Papakipos, genius developer who was smack dab in the middle of working on a Chrome OS, would suddenly drop the project and take a job at Facebook. Most of us have assumed that there had to be something amazing in the works, and pay couldn’t have been a factor; after all, how much would Google have paid to keep him?
Now, with news of a secret Facebook phone project, we may have seen what it was that managed to lure with away from the biggest company on the web to the dominating social networking site and major competitor.
In addition to Papakipos, Joe Hewitt is believed to be on the secretive project, which is said to be so under wraps that most staff at Facebook have heard nothing about it. Hewitt is another heavy player in the development world, and anyone who uses Firefox can thank him for his help in creating it.
So, what will the Facebook phone be, exactly? The software is what FB is said to be working on for the moment, creating an operating system that would compete with Android and iPhone OS models. The shell will be handled by a third-party, which is said to have already been outsourced.
This is both exciting and annoying news; Facebook is taking over everything. We will have to see what comes of these rumors.
