Hurricane Bertha has turned into the first major hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic season.Washington (ChattahBox) – Hurricane Bertha has turned into the first major hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic season.

As of Monday afternoon, it gained in power to have sustained winds of at least 115 miles per hour.

U.S. forecasters originally predicted that it would head straight for the island of Bermuda as a Category 3 storm, but things may be starting to change.

It is still expected to slow down in forward speed over the next couple of days, and turn toward the northwest.

As of 5 p.m. EDT yesterday, the storm’s center was around 1,100 miles southwest of Bermuda, moving at 12 mph.
