US faces potential bio attack in next 5 years

December 2, 2008

(ChattahBox) — A bipartisan committee briefed the Vice-President today that the country can expect a nuclear or a biological warfare before 2013. The committee also suggested that President-elect Obama and his administration should take stringent measures to counter and prepare for germ warfare by terrorists. The report first obtained by the Associated Press states that the safety margins are shrinking and not growing.

The Commission on the Prevention of WMD Proliferation and Terrorism, led by former Sens. Bob Graham of Florida and Jim Talent of Missouri apprised the government that the terrorists still lack the technical and scientific ability but may soon overcome that constraint if they find unscrupulous scientists willing to sell their know-how. It also encouraged the new White House to appoint one official on the National Security Council to exclusively coordinate US intelligence and foreign policy that would help in preventing spreading nuclear or biological weapons.

The report also indicates a possible nexus of terrorism, nuclear and biological weapons especially acute in Pakistan. “Were one to map terrorism and weapons of mass destruction today, all roads would lead to Pakistan,” said the report.

The report states that it is easier for the terrorists to obtain biological pathogens as they are easily available in civilian laboratories than nuclear weapons or radioactive materials which are heavily guarded. These biological weapons can also be used in aerosol forms which can lead to mass destruction. So far Al-Qaeda is the only terrorist group known that is intent on planning a nuclear attack against the United States.

What’s the object of reporting this? Will anything actually be done to prevent it from happening? Other than diplomacy of course?
