Musical Torture Plagues Gitmo

December 12, 2008

Cuba (ChattahBox) – Over the past few years many stories of the torture used on terror suspects at Guantanamo Bay have been released, each more horrifying then the last. But a new, disturbing form of torture is coming through the cracks, and it has musicians up in arms.

The method of using loud, repetitive music, sometimes for as much as a month at a time, is being practiced regularly at US Military prisons and CIA encampments, as a way of disorienting and emotionally breaking the prisoners held there. While it may seem an odd way of causing pain, it is an effective one, and according to one former prisoner of the Dark Prison in Afghanistan, and now being held at Gitmo, it was enough to make many completely lose control.

“There was loud music, (Eminem’s) ‘Slim Shady’ and Dr. Dre for 20 days. I heard this nonstop over and over,” said Binyam Mohammed to his defense attorney, Clive Stafford Smith . “The CIA worked on people, including me, day and night for the months before I left. Plenty lost their minds.”

While the spokeswoman for the prison claims that these tactics are no longer being used at Gitmo today, it is in unclear whether or not they are being used elsewhere, or will be in the future. When asked, she refused to comment.

So where in this article does it mention specific instances of musicians being up in arms? I was curious what the musicians thought of their music being used in a method of torture, but this article didn’t serve up the details it promised. It is incomplete.
