Jena Six Teen Mychal Bell Shoots Himself in Suicide Attempt?

December 30, 2008

(ChattahBox) — Mychal Bell, a teen convicted as the ‘ring leader’ in in the widely publicized ‘Jena Six’ hate crime, sustained a self inflicted gunshot wound to the chest a few days after being arrested on Christmas Eve. Monroe Police Sgt. Cassandra Wooten reports that the 18 year old turned a .22-caliber handgun on himself at 7:40 p.m. on Monday in Monroe, Louisiana. She speculated that he was upset over the media coverage that his recent arrest had caused. “He didn’t want to be in the news again.” She went on to say that Mychal’s injuries are not life threatening.

On December 24, the teen was caught hiding under a vehicle by a security guard and an off-duty police officer after he fled a department store with several shirts and a pair of jeans. He was charged with shoplifting, resisting arrest and simple assault and was released on $1,300 bond.

Bell’s Dec. 24 arrest occurred less than one month after he completed a sentence for his role in the Jena Six case involving a group of black teens who were initially charged with attempted second-degree murder in the 2006 beating of one of their white classmates (Justin Barker) at Jena High School. A number of events took place in and around Jena in the months preceding the Barker assault, which have been linked to an alleged escalation of racial tensions. These events included the hanging of nooses from a tree in the high school courtyard, two violent confrontations between white and black youths, and the destruction by fire of the main building of Jena High School. Many viewed the original charges as excessive and racially discriminatory. Bell eventually pleaded guilty to a juvenile charge of second-degree battery. He is currently living with a foster family in Monroe. Barker, the teen beaten in 2006 and released the same day from the emergency room, has filed a lawsuit against the teens, their parents, the school district and others allegedly involved.

The real tragedy here is that this piece of dung is still alive. I wish more young black males would follow this example but PLEASE: LEARN HOW TO SHOOT.

I am a servant of the most HIGH, JESUS CHRIST. It is the hate that this young man and each of you bloggers that causes these situations to begin with. Stop for just a minute and think, yes he was wrong for his crime, and no doubt should of been sentenced for a longer period of time, but what about his soul? What about your souls? Have you thought about where you are going to spend eternity? It is time for people to wake up and realize that we really are in the last days. CHRIST will return soon for those who have faith in Him, and have truly been born again.

Repent, and be baptized in the NAME of JESUS CHRIST for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

    God bless all of you

It was good that Bell wasnt able to shoot himself seriously taking into consideration his family who might have lost a son if he was able to do so.

According to CNN.com this poor child was distraught over all the media attention this has garnered. His sorry ass sure didn’t mind the media attention when it was saving his hide from being charged as an adult. Just another typical wanna be thug. Too bad he isn’t a better shot.

After reading/seeing all these headlines, etc. I have come to the conclusion that the white rednecks were right. I mean, these blacks are thugs. From my contact with blacks in everyday life, it’s been proven to me that the stereotypes are right about 75% of the time. I am Mexican, so no bias here.

This is so sad that at 18 years of age to think that there is no hope or that things will never get any better- I pray for him and pray that he will be surrounded by people who will help him to see that this will pass and that things always change. Instead of being one of those people who stand at the base of a building yelling up at the person on the ledge “jump, jump”, please pray for him, its not a hopeless situation, his life can get better if the right people are there to encourage him.

I can’t believe that people are so heartless and uncompassionate! As though you are walking around misstake free. I find it funny all the stones that people throw when it is someone else. This child has been in a situation that many of us will never have to see, and did it a such a young age. Comments that people are making are just because he’s black, but many of you aren’t intelligent enough to look at the situation for what it is. Young black men around this country feel helpless and worthless and it’s not just the young ones it’s the older ones too, because they are marked with X’s on their backs just because they are black. I find it funny the the mexican said that was so harsh, the 75% of the stereotypes are true about black people. I ask you this, since I have a mexican niece, should I expect the stereotypes that are said about Mexican-Americans to be true about her? Should I expect her to have a child out of wed-lock by the age of 15, since it is said the mexican- american teenage pregnancy is about 40%? Open your eyes people, the only way that things that get better is if we stop looking that the color of a person or people and look that the person. Mychal Bell has been through a situation that none of us have, and could you handle that? The spotlight is on him, however I don’t see anyone talking about what it might feel to go through living in a town full of racial tension on a daily basis. Educate yourselves, look at the reasons why people are in the situations that they are in. I completely think he’s wrong for stealing and should get in trouble for it, however he needs some help and that’s what he is crying out for.

This idiot is too incompetent to even kill himself. Somebody help him next time.

I can’t believe some of you are calling several felonies and misdemeanors mere mistakes. Locking your keys in the car is a mistake. Spilling coffee on your shirt is a mistake. Beating an innocent victim half to death is a conscious decision with malicious intent. Mychal is nothing but a thug and deserves no sympathy. I, however, do feel sympathy for his parents. It must be an awful feeling knowing that you are responsible for bring a monster into this world.
