Bush Denied Aid To Israel For Planned Iran Air Strike of Nuclear Facilities

January 11, 2009

US (ChattahBox) – According to a breaking story by the New York Times, a new report alleges that Israel attempted  to get American aid in early 2007 to acquire bunker-busting bombs for an air strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities.

The plans were established after a 2007 report by US Intelligence found Iran to have discontinued their nuclear program four years prior, a finding that even US officials, President Bush included, were skeptical of.

The strike, which would have been an open attack against Iran, was thought to be an ineffective move that would further jeopardize efforts to to truly stop Iran’s push for nuclear weapons, and so President Bush refused, instead opting for a top secret program that would work towards covert sabotage of their suspected facilities.

The covert program has been followed through the last year, according to US officials, and is continuing for the moment. It will be up to President-Elect Barack Obama whether or not the plans continue once Bush leaves office, and he is sworn in.

The question of Obama’s decision is yet another serious issue that must be immediately dealt with, before further plans by Israel could lead to greater Middle East conflicts. It is unclear how he may react to the plan, as either position on the issue could potentially cause greater tensions, especially with his attempts to increase negotiations and peaceful talks with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmidimijad.

Stephen Hadley, Bush’s security adviser, spoke to the Associated Press in an interview earlier this week, where he made it clear that he believed Obama’s greatest challenge in the Middle East is likely to be Iran, and how to handle further sanctions, which will be desperately needed to avoid hostilities.
