Salma Hayek breast-feeds starving African baby (Video)

February 11, 2009

(ChattahBox) — Actress Salma Hayek came across a starving baby of an African woman unable to breast-feed, while being filmed by a “Nightline” camera crew on a humanitarian mission in Sierra Leone. What is an international sex symbol to do in such a situation? Why, pop out a breast on camera and nurse that baby. Top that, Angelina Jolie! (not my words but brilliantly put).¬† The 42-year-old actress, who was nursing her own daughter Valentina at the time, explained the situation:

“The baby was perfectly healthy, but the mother didn’t have milk. He was very hungry. I was weaning Valentina, but I still had a lot of milk that I was pumping, so I breast-fed the baby.

“You should have seen his eyes. When he felt the nourishment, he immediately stopped crying,” said Hayek.

Hayek also tells the story of how the surrogate breast feeding is a bit of a family tradition in the video (below).

The actress and UNICEF spokesperson visited the West African country in September as part of her involvement in the fight against tetanus, one of the reasons Sierra Leone has the highest infant and child death rate in the world.

The video clip is so genuinely heartwarming, and the mindless blog commentary (“I wish I were that baby!”) fails to diminish¬† it. Note the video is not graphic but if you just are looking for a reason to freak out don’t watch:
