Woman Attacked By Chimp Might Receive Face Transplant

February 20, 2009

Ohio (ChattahBox) – Three days after a Connecticut woman was mauled by a 200-pound chimp owned by her friend, Sandra Herold, she has been transferred from Stamford Hospital to the Cleveland Clinic, where she may receive a full face transplant.

Her injuries were shocking, with her face unrecognizable under the many slashes, gouges, and tears that had literally taken off most of her face, as well as her hands. According to Bill Ackley, one of the two rescue workers to first arrive on the scene, just the fact that she lived was miraculous.

“It was amazing to us she had these type of injuries and they were survivable,” he commented. “I would liken it to a machine-type accident. She had some crushing injuries and tearing injuries to her hands.”

The woman Charla Nash, 55, will first have to be completely stabilized before a full face transplant can be considered at the Cleveland Clinic, which two months ago performed the nation’s first successful facial transplant.  Doctors would also have to find a suitable donor, whose race, blood and tissue types match the patient’s.  The latest word is Nash’s injuries are similar to those that can occur in a dog attack and doctors will likely try to treat her injuries that way.
