Conservative S.C. Newspaper Blasts Gov. Sanford for Stimulus Waiver Nonsense

March 16, 2009

(ChattahBox)–A conservative, South Carolina newspaper, The State, penned an editorial on Sunday blasting, (tearing to pieces) Gov. Mark Sanford (the non-horse in the photo) for his political grandstanding, on his refusal to accept $700 million in federal cash unless he can use it to pay down the state’s projected pension debt. Gov. Sanford officially asked President Obama on Wednesday, for a “waiver” to divert stimulus funds intended to help the thousands of unemployed citizens in his state. Sanford requested his waiver as part of his anti-Stimulus Bill campaign, on the very day his state’s unemployment rate climbed to double digits at 10.4 percent.

The conservative newspaper described Gov. Sanford’s waiver reasoning as: “When you’re starving and someone offers to buy you lunch, you don’t say, “I only want your money if I can put it into my 401(k).” The Paper’s editorial went on to state, that Sanford’s grandstanding is “… disingenuously tailoring his request to enthrall his anti-government groupies…” The State plans to call on the state legislature to ignore Sanford’s disregard for the suffering jobless in his state and to move to accept all of the stimulus money to help South Carolinian’s get back to work.

Sanford is thought to be positioning himself with the, ultra conservative, right wing segment of the Republican Party, for a run at the Presidency in 2012. Sanford also raised the ire of many when he recently compared the Stimulus Bill to Zimbabwe, after Democratic House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn told Sanford that his refusal of stimulus cash would hurt jobless African Americans, disproportionately.

There seems to be no end to Republican grandstanding and nonsense these days, as these blowhard dinosaurs scramble to find relevancy in a Democratic Obama Presidency, which is focused on helping middle class Americans instead of helping the rich get richer, as the Republicans did for the past eight years.

Update: The White House has rejected South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford’s request to use a portion of the state’s allotted federal stimulus funds to pay off state debt instead of spending it on government services or programs. The governor has said he would reject part of the stimulus money if Obama wouldn’t give him flexibility in spending it, so the balls in his court.

Mark Sanford Ignores Letter From OMB Director

LETTER TO GOVERNOR MARK SANFORD – SOUTH CAROLINA

Letter from Office of Management and Budget Director Peter Orszag to Gov. Mark Sanford denying his request for a waiver.

    COPY OF LETTER
    http://media.charleston.net/2009/pdf/obama2sanford_031609.pdf

    ***********************************************************************

The letter states: “Specifically, by statue, the State allocation must be used as follows:”

“by statue” AND “must” …what is there not to understand?

    Brace yourself…

“Sanford will release details of his follow-up request today”.

Okay, Sanford has been informed in writing that the “State allocation” , by “statue” “must” be used as “follows”

Now, Sanford read the letter, yet he insists on a “follow-up request”

What is his problem? He has to be the most thick-headed, bone-headed, stubborn, money grubbing politician on this planet.

…Ignorance is no excuse in the eyes of the Law.

Thank you for all the informative comments:

It is indeed a travesty that Gov. Sanford cares so little for the unemployed of his state and cares more about his 2012 presidential ambitions. He knows exactly what he is doing: pandering to the right-wing of his party. That isn’t governing. I will update this story as soon as new information comes in. I am sure his state legislature will by-pass his foolishness. Stay tuned to ChattahBox for the latest in news and commentary.
