Gates Compares Bin Laden Search to 17-Year Long Unabomber Hunt

March 19, 2009

(ChattahBox)— U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates spoke briefly with Pentagon reporters on Wednesday, comparing the hunt for Osama bin Laden to the 17-year long search for US domestic terrorist, Unabomber Theodore Kaczynski. Gates was asked about the progress of the 7-year long search for Osama bin Laden and his lieutenant, Ayman al-Zawahri, believed to be responsible for the 911 terror attacks in 2001. Gates suggested it could take years before they are found. He pointed to the many years it took for US law enforcement to capture the Unabomber, and even the unsuccessful decades-long search for American hostages in Lebanon. Gates’s comparisons are not encouraging.

Gates was responding to reporters’ questions suggesting the United States and the Bush administration dropped the ball in the hunt for the al Qaeda leader. Gates quipped that Americans attend too many Hollywood movies and expect too much from the military. al Qaeda leaders are believed to be in hiding in remote areas along the Pakistani/Afghanistan border, receiving help from the Taliban, now re-emerging with a vengence in Afghanistan.

Former President Bush was severely criticized for failing to capture Bin Laden in Afghanistan in 2001, when he had a chance to stop him from fleeing to the caves in the mountains of Tora Bora, along the Pakistani border. Critics say Bush halted the search for the al Qaeda leader and re-directed resources to the war in Iraq.

Gates claims the remote mountainous area of Pakistan presents a serious challenge to military personal searching for Bin Laden and it could take many years before they are successful. Gates contends the recent Pakistan missile air strikes on al Qaeda safe havens have been successful, and could lead to their defeat soon, without providing any specifics.

Meanwhile Gates promises that the CIA and other agencies continue to actively hunt down Bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahri. Based on Gates’ reference to the Unabomber search, it looks like we won’t be seeing Bin Laden’s capture for another decade.
