Body of missing Northern California girl found in pond stuffed in suitcase

April 7, 2009

(ChattahBox) — The hunt for a missing eight-year-old girl, Sandra Cantu, missing since almost two weeks ago in  Northern California has ended in tragedy.

The remains of the missing girl were found Monday in a suitcase recovered from a pond a couple of miles from where she was last seen more than a week ago, authorities said.

Farmworkers draining the irrigation pond found the suitcase containing Sandra Cantu’s body, Tracy Police Chief Janet Thiessen said at an evening news conference.

Given how she was found the investigation turns to murder.  The Police Chief said:

“We will be determining the person or persons responsible for this reprehensible act, and we will bring them to justice.”

Chief Thiessen said the 8-year-old was wearing the same clothes she wore when last seen on March 27: a pink “Hello Kitty” T-shirt and black leggings.

Sandra disappeared from the Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park after telling her mother she was going to a friend’s home to play.

Witnesses told investigators the suitcase was not there when they emptied the pond about two weeks ago.

Authorities planned an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
