Souter Replacement Non Legal Vocation Preferred by Dems?

May 4, 2009

Washington D.C (ChattahBox) – Associate Justice David Souter is set to retire, and so the scramble for the vacant Supreme Court seat is beginning. But US Democrats are urging President Obama to stay away from the traditional choices.

According to sources, various judges within the Supreme Court are advising President Obama to replace Souter with someone who has been in fields other then law, giving a wider array of experience that may increase the scope of the usual decisions.

“I would like to see more people from outside the judicial monastery – somebody who has had some real-life experience,” Patrick Leahy (D-Vt) said in a recent interview on This Week.

He isn’t the only person to feel that way, and the cry for Obama to stay away from lower court judges is being echoed by other Democrats, who are hoping for a more Liberal pick this time around.

Some of the great justices of the 20th Century were Thurgood Marshall, Frank Murphy, William Douglas, Hugo Black and Earl Warren, were not previous members of the judiciary. They did not live in the isolation of the legal world, the kind of jurist that Obama is now threatening to choose.  Many suggest Secretary of State Hillary Clinton might be the perfect choice.
