GQ Article Paints Dark Portrait of Donald Rumsfeld as Defense Secretary

May 20, 2009

(ChattahBox)—“Rumsfeld, what the hell is going on there? Are you watching what’s on television? Is that the United States of America or some Third World nation I’m watching? What the hell are you doing?”

According to a recent article by Robert Draper in GQ magazine, former President George Bush shouted the above statement to former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld days after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and Rumsfeld still refused to send in active-duty Military troops to help with the rescue efforts.

Donald Rumsfeld was loathe to send in Military troops to help with the recovery effort citing “unity of command” issues, while the nation watched in horror as an entire city drowned. Responding to a request by Department of Homeland Security Secretary, Michael Chertoff asking for thousands of troops, Rumsfeld was said to say, “I’m going to tell the president we don’t need any more than the National Guard.”

The Katrina debacle is not all that’s covered in the GQ article. Perhaps the most damaging, is the allegation by former Bush administration officials that Rumsfeld prepared extremely creepy cover sheets for the Secretary of Defense Worldwide Intelligence Update, which featured photos of soldiers on the battlefield in Iraq accompanied with biblical quotes. Draper obtained 11 of the cover sheets and has them displayed throughout his article.

The April 3 cover sheet, said to be delivered to President Bush used a biblical passage from Joshua 1:9 proclaiming: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” Draper asserts Rumsfeld used biblical references to manipulate Bush who was a born again Christian.

Besides being crass and calculating, the Holy Crusade cover sheets would have caused a huge political scandal, if they had ever been leaked. An unnamed former Pentagon official claimed “the fallout “would be as bad as Abu Ghraib,” handing the terrorists ammunition that the U.S. was indeed engaged in a holy crusade against Islam itself.

The entire GQ article reads like an outpouring of all the dirt on Rumsfeld that former Bush administration officials have been holding in all this time. Finally, it’s allowed to come out like a faucet. The article paints Rumsfeld as a Defense Secretary so protective of his turf, that he alienated just about everyone around him, which in the end proved damaging to the Department of Defense and was his undoing.

Rumsfeld was one of the most disliked and polarizing figures in the Bush administration and Draper’s article reveals the behind the scene machinations and shady maneuvering that dominated his reign as Defense Secretary.

The unnamed Bush supporters who provided Draper with the dirt on Rumsfeld seem to be on a mission to portray George Bush as a victim of the evil forces surrounding him, headed by Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney.

Well “Lordy,” as Rumsfeld was known to say, let’s just all be happy the Bush administration is out of office.

Rumsfeld denied through an aide that he was responsible for preparing the biblical cover sheets, but didn’t address other allegations made in the article.

Bush is no more a “born again Christian” than Stalin was; he’s just an ignorant cretin who believes that manipulating people through religion is easier than using armed force (and he’s probably right; look how many wars have been fought over religion, and that’s still going on). But he has *NEVER* lived according to the principles of Christianity.

    Dear Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld:

You, Dubya, Cheney, Tenant lied us into an illegal war. You Dubya, Cheney, and Tenant were responsible for torturing persons into linking 911 with Iraq. What could be worse for We The People, We The Taxpayers, and We The People of The United States Of America? Can you sleep at night after lying us all into an illegal war? May God have mercy on your soul. It is based on duty and honor that you confess your lies to We The People, We The Taxpayers, and We The Voters prior to your death. I hope your days are few based on what you have done to The United States Of America. You are responsible for the deaths of over one million persons unfairly based on fabricated information. It is a fact….I can see why you live on Mount Misery…..because you are a miserable human. We The People, We The Taxpayers, and We The Voters deserve a better explaination from you. What is your (better) explaination for what you have done to We The People, We The Taxpayers, and We The Voters of The United States of America? Simply you are a war criminal like at Nuremberg.

    Please Respond.
