Obama Selects Sonia Sotomayor for Supreme Court

May 26, 2009

(ChattahBox) — Barack Obama has reportedly selected Sonia Sotomayor, a 54-year-old Circuit Judge, and possibly the first ever Hispanic Supreme Court justice as his first appointment to America’s highest court today.  Sotomayor would succeed the retiring Justice David Souter, and barring the unexpected her confirmation should be assured, with Democrats holding a large majority in the Senate.  Not that there won’t be an ugly fight beforehand. Sotomayor, brings 17 years on the bench, so there will be a body of work for resisting Republicans to pick through.

Obama had said that he wanted a justice who combined intellect and empathy – the ability to understand the troubles of everyday Americans. Sotomayor is the daughter of Puerto Rican parents raised in Bronx public housing projects, and eventually graduating from Princeton University summa cum laude before attending Yale Law School.

First President Bush nominated Sotomayor in 1991 to the federal district court on the recommendation of Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Democrat of New York, and she was confirmed a year later. President Bill Clinton decided to elevate her to the appeals court in 1997 and she was confirmed a year later.

President Obama will nominate Judge Sonia Sotomayor
If confirmed by the Democratic-controlled Senate, Judge Sotomayor, 54, would replace Justice David H. Souter to become the second woman on the court and only the third female justice in the history of the Supreme Court. She also would be the first Hispanic justice to serve on the Supreme Court.
