Black Harvard Student Kicked off Campus: Claims Racism

May 27, 2009

(ChattahBox)—Chanequa Campbell, 21-year old Harvard student won’t be graduating with her senior class next month, because of racism she says. School officials linked her to a shooting death that occurred in the basement of her dorm, because she was friends with the girlfriend of the man who was charged in the shooting.

On Friday, school officials showed up at Chanequa’s dorm room, with a trespassing order in hand, demanding that she leave immediately, informing her that she would not be graduating with her class, refusing to tell her why.

Chanequa is friends with fellow Harvard student, Brittany Smith, 21-years old, who is a girlfriend of Jabrai Jordan Copneya, a 20-year old songwriter from NY, and the man who was arrested in connection with the shooting death of 21-year old Justin Cosby in the basement of a Harvard dorm on May 18.

The police are referring to the shooting death as a robbery that went bad. Justin Cosby was said to be a pot dealer and he was found with a pound of marijuana and $1,000 in cash on his body. Two other men are being sought by the police in connection to the shooting.

Chanequa says she has never met the shooting victim, Cosby and denies any involvement in the shooting. “I have no knowledge of anything that happened, none whatsoever,” Campbell said.

Authorities say Copney, the shooter, was given an electronic student key card to gain access in an area of the dorm open only to students. Chanequa says it wasn’t her card. At the time of the shooting she was at work and taking an exam, said her attorney Jeffrey Karp.

The long time girlfriend of the shooter, Brittany Smith will be allowed to graduate and she is not banned from campus as Chanequa has been.

Chanequa claims she was signaled out because “I’m black and “I’m poor and I’m from New York and I walk a certain way and I keep my clothes a certain way,” she said.

Harvard officials refused to address the reasons for banning Chanequa from campus and not allowing her to graduate.

Her four years of hard work were supposed to represent the end of the long unlikely journey Chanequa took from the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY, one of the poorest in the city, to reach the pinnacle of education at this ivy league institution, where only 11 percent of students are black.

Chanequa is a New York Times scholarship winner, a Coca-Cola scholarship winner and a member of the National Honor Society. She worked hard to get where she is, and now sees her once bright future, disappearing before her eyes.

There are questions raised by Harvard’s treatment of Chanequa that school officials are not answering. She has not been charged with a crime, nor have school officials cited a school regulation or code she has violated. And there is the additional question of the difference in treatment of the shooter’s girlfriend.

There are rumors circulating around the Harvard campus that Cosby was the major marijuana dealer at Harvard and that the two girls dealt drugs for him. Chanequa denies knowing Cosby.

Meanwhile, her attorney is attempting to work out a solution with Harvard, so that Chanequa can graduate with her class.

She has not been officially expelled as yet, and her attorney is hoping a young woman’s promise of a bright future is not washed down the drain due to unfounded rumors and allegations of racism.
