Former Military Interrogator to Cheney: You are Wrong, Torture Cost American Lives

May 27, 2009

(ChattahBox)—Matthew Alexander, a former military interrogator stationed in Iraq, Air Force reserve officer and a 14-year veteran, says Dick Cheney is dead wrong when he claims torture saved American lives and that Cheney ‘fundamentally misunderstands the way America is viewed around the world.”

Alexander says in a new video by Brave New Films that Cheney’s torture policies are responsible for the deaths of hundreds, “if not thousands” of American lives.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney has claimed that the use of enhanced interrogation techniques, including waterboarding, were necessary to save American lives, but Alexander says in his experience as an interrogator in Iraq, just the opposite is true.

The torturing of Muslim prisoners at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay emboldened and inflamed foreign fighters, who arrived in Iraq to join the fight, and made up nearly 90 percent of all suicide bombers, who were responsible for the deaths of American soldiers.

Alexander says he personally conducted more than 300 interrogations in Iraq and oversaw more than 1,000 and most of the captured foreign fighters said they came to fight against the U.S., because of the torture of Muslims by Americans.

“At the prison where I conducted interrogations,” Alexander said, “we heard day in and day out, foreign fighters who had been captured state that the number one reason that they had come to fight in Iraq was because of torture and abuse…” Seeing pictures and hearing stories of Muslims brutally tortured by Americans put foreign fighters over the edge.

Alexander says his task force tracked down Al-Qaeda leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, by using non-coercive law enforcement techniques and not torture. “In essence, we worked smarter, not harsher,” said Alexander.

Torture apologists like Dick Cheney “confuse harshness with effectiveness,” he said, noting that the goal of every interrogation is to obtain accurate intelligence and that is not achieved through abuse and torture.

Cheney’s views contradict the basic tenets of a successful interrogation, which is “not to coerce information from a prisoner, but to convince a prisoner to cooperate.” The use of torture also exposes Americans as frauds and hypocrites, which is one of Al-Qaeda’s stated goals. Al-Qaeda operatives use our hypocrisy as a recruiting tool, pointing to the false notion of America as a beacon for hope and democracy.

Cheney denies that the United States’ use of torture was used as a recruiting tool for Al-Qaeda terrorists.

Ultimately says Alexander, the misguided use of torture by the Bush administration, reflects a fundamental failure of leadership. Their excuse has always been the terrorist attacks of 9/11, which terrified the nation and led Dick Cheney and George Bush to sanction torture to prevent future attacks.

When Matthew Alexander joined the military to serve his country, something Dick Cheney never did, he promised to uphold the constitution not just on good days, but on the dark days as well, when the integrity of even the best men and women is tested and measured. Dick Cheney came up short and now he is on a media tour to rewrite history to defend his torture policies.

Alexander says that we rely on our leaders to make rational and sound decisions without emotion, during a nation’s dark days, and the Bush administration and Dick Cheney let their country down.

Matthew Alexander is right. Bush and Cheney are cowards and traitors; all they have ever cared about is the enrichment of themselves and their cronies; they never cared how many Americans had to die to provide them with wealth and power.
