Chris Mathews Bashes Gingrich’s Speech: Xenophobic

June 10, 2009

(ChattahBox)— Hardball’s Chris Mathews wasn’t impressed with former disgraced Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich’s speech before the Republican fundraising dinner on Monday, deriding his worldview as xenophobic.

Mathews scoffed at the idea of Newt Gingrich as the comeback elder statesman, who would lead the Republicans back to power.

“If that’s gonna lead the Republican Party out of the wilderness, maybe they should just stay in the wilderness, because he looks like the enemy,” said Mathews after viewing a clip from Gingrich’s speech that hit all the usual conservative talking points of hyper-partisan and polarizing politics.

Gingrich in his speech proudly announced he was not “a citizen of the world,” declaring the notion as “…intellectual nonsense and stunningly dangerous,” saying he would not want to be a citizen of North Korea, Russia or Zimbabwe.

Mathews described Gingrich’s comments as “xenophobia” and an “anti-world mentality.”

Gingrich went on to press his “anti-world mentality” by calling for the removal of federal judges who quote precedents of foreign law and supporting a move to make English the official language of government.

Despite Gingrich’s effort in hitting all the right-wing memes, the event attendees weren’t impressed enough to hand over their cash.

The dinner, with Gingrich as keynote speaker only brought in $14.5 million, the lowest total in at least five years. Last year, with former President Bush as speaker, the event raised $21.5 million.
