Federal Judge Impeached Prior To Serving Prison Sentence

June 13, 2009

Texas (ChattahBox) – The case of a federal judge who has been forced to step down and is going to prison for the severe sexual harassment of two female employees, is once again in the limelight.

Judge Samuel Kent has once against caused outrage in the state of Texas after stating that he intends to continue receiving his salary and benefits until the end of the year, and refuses to step down, despite having been ordered to serve a prison sentence, NPR reports.

The refusal to give up his position willingly as a federal judge has led Congress to vote unanimously for impeachment, as the only political power in the US with the ability to do so. Kent is the first federal judge in more than 20 years to be forced from his position through impeachment.

The case itself has already sparked anger, after a guilty plea of obstruction of justice meant that the original sexual charges (which includes racist and sexist diatribes, abusive language, and even some sexual assault) were dropped. The abuse is said to have lasted for years.

Kent has been sentenced to 33 months in prison.
