GOP Activist’s Facebook Says: Escaped Gorilla, Ancestor of Michelle Obama

June 14, 2009

(ChattahBox)—A male lowland gorilla scaled a wall escaping from his enclosure at the Columbia, South Carolina Riverbanks Zoo on Friday, furiously pounding his chest and tackling a pizza vendor, who suffered minor injuries, before returning to his enclosure five minutes later on his own.

After hearing the news of the gorilla’s escape, a local GOP activist exposed his vile racism, by suggesting that the gorilla was an “ancestor” of Michelle Obama, the lovely and admired First Lady of the United States.

His name is Rusty DePass, a former state Senate candidate and a former State Election Commission chairman, who has been actively involved in South Carolina Republican politics for decades.

He has served as Chairman and State Executive Committeeman for the Richland County Republican Party, is listed in Who’s Who in American Politics and was one of South Carolina’s presidential electors in 1984, casting his vote for the Reagan-Bush ticket.

Apparently, he thought his revolting racist attack on our First Lady would just wither away without comment, like any other vile racist “joke” made in the presence of his appreciative colleagues.

But this time, Rusty DePass shouted it from the rooftops of this gentile southern city of Columbia, SC and it was heard around the world, for everyone to witness. Because you see, DePass posted his disgusting display of racism on his Facebook page.

His Facebook page has since been deleted, but a screen cap of his racist comment remains. Responding to the gorilla’s escape, DePass posted: “I’m sure it’s just one of Michelle’s ancestors – probably harmless.”

When confronted about his remark by local news station, WIS News 10, DePass admitted he was referring to our First Lady, Michelle Obama. “I am as sorry as I can be if I offended anyone.

The comment was clearly in jest,” said DePass. Well that explains it; DePass was making a “Joke.” If his half-hearted apology wasn’t insulting enough, DePass went on to “clarify” his “Joke,” saying “The comment was hers. Not mine,” claiming the first lady made statements in the media recently saying we are all descendants of apes.

A search for such comments made by the First Lady turned up nothing.

There are not enough variations of the word vile in any thesaurus to adequately describe the behavior of Rusty DePass.

People who think and utter offensive racist comments, like Rusty DePass don’t belong in polite company and yet he is a longtime, South Carolina Republican activist and a former George Bush supporter, who now works for the top, law enforcement official in the state. His racism has apparently served him well in South Carolina’s GOP establishment.

Everyone around him in Republican circles, who has ever snickered at a racist “joke” uttered by Rusty DePass, is equally as loathsome and should share in his public humiliation.

Columbia Mayor Bob Coble condemned DePass’ racist comments, calling for him to apologize. But any further apology from the likes of Rusty DePass won’t undo the damage already done.

Q: What’s the difference between the Nazis of WWII, Dick Cheney and G. W. Bush (who ordered the torture of prisoners), and far-Right Republicans?

    A. The Nazis have already been tried for their crimes against humanity.

Equal opportunity. I think not. We live in a country where there is an obvious double standard. For eight years we were fed daily abuse concerning our prior president. Much of which was blatently bigoted, it was not only accepted; It was praised. It’s quite disheartening to see anyone strike out at another based strictly on their skin color. It’s even more disheartening to see how blind we’ve become to the unequality of standards that are excpected between the races.

And this guy works for the top law enforcement person in the state of South Carolina? Says a lot about ALL the big whigs in that state, doesn’t it? This man is a full-blown racist who still lives in the 50s and 60s and has been hiding under a vile umbrella of the Republican party!! Anyone notice that there were hardly any African Americans in the McCain rallies?? Is there any surprise? The Repubs are equivalent to the white supremacists (sp)….the party of the “white” man! This guy should be firedf from his lofty position and NOT be allowed to hold any kind of government job! I realize the entire state of SC does not represent this guy! By the way, just who are his ancestors? I could name quite a few none-human entities. 🙂

He’s as sorry as HE can be. So, he’s not able to be sorry. I think that hits the nail on the head.

PLEASE, Jon Stewart — do a piece on this old white racist!

mr depasses’s’ comment only proves that he was the first in line at theKKK and hitler youth rally’s back in his caveman days. he is so used to the status quo in his little circle, that he just can’t help himself. it is only the sad sad sad way that he was raised. he would like to see america the way it was in the 18,19 and 20th centuries and now the 21st century!!!

There was nothing racist about the statement. DePass was comparing Michelle Obama’s appearance to one of a gorilla. He didn’t say she looked like a gorilla because she is black. He said nothing about black people in his status. The only thing racist here is your assumption that all black people look alike. Otherwise, why would you think that DePass’s insult of Michelle Obama’s personal appearance also insults black people in general.

I think it is important to point out that non-black people can look like gorillas as well; look at Gerald Ford. George W. Bush looks more like a monkey than a gorilla. That comparison was made in public repeatedly for over eight years and nobody was ever accused of racism as far as I know.

The statement is incorrect, of course, because anything alive today cannot be an “ancestor” of anything else alive today. If the statement was in reference to evolution, it shows a profound misunderstanding of the theory.
