Toll House Cookie Dough With E. Coli Recalled: 66 Illnesses

June 19, 2009

(ChattahBox)—The FDA announced a voluntary recall of refrigerated Nestle SA Toll House cookie dough, which the CDC has linked to 66 cases of food poisoning from dangerous e. coli bacteria.

Nestle SA is recalling 47 varieties of the refrigerated cookie dough that is linked to illnesses in 28 states. At least 25 people were sick enough to require hospitalization. Seven of the patients became seriously ill with a deadly strain of e.coli that can cause kidney damage and death.

The sick consumers reported symptoms of cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. Many of the sick people had eaten the refrigerated cookie dough raw, right out of the container, which may have contributed to the e.coli outbreak.

The company has not found the e.coli contamination in its products in its factories. Nestle is recalling nearly 50 varieties of the Toll House cookie dough, including tubs, tubes and discontinued seasonal flavors.

Nestles’ cookie dough ice cream brands, including Dreyer’s and Edy’s, are not part of the recall.

It’s probably a good idea not to consume any cookie dough product raw.
