Wife Of Governor Sanford Warned Him Not to go to Argentina

June 26, 2009

US (ChattahBox) – Jenny Sanford, wife of disgraced South Carolina governor Mark Sanford, spoke out today about her husband’s affair, saying that she had ‘warned him’ not to go to his mistress in Argentina. Jenny Sanford said that she had known about the affair for some time, and that her husband had promised to break it off. When he told her he would be going off on his own to write, she made it clear that she expected him to do just that, and to stay away from his allegedly former mistress. As we all know, he didn’t keep that promise.

As for the effect of the admission from both Governor Sanford, and Jenny herself? She was candid on that front as well.

“He’s gonna have to worry about that, and I’m going to worry about my family and the character of my children,” she told the Associated Press.

She also had some strong words in her official address to the media, which was quoted by Politico:

“I believe wholeheartedly in the sanctity, dignity and importance of the institution of marriage. I believe that has been consistently reflected in my actions. When I found out about my husband’s infidelity, I worked immediately to first seek reconciliation through forgiveness, and then to work diligently to repair our marriage.”

Jenny, said she discovered her husband’s affair early this year after coming across a copy of a letter to the mistress in one of his files in the official governor’s mansion. He had asked her to find some financial information, she said, not an unusual request considering she is a Georgetown-educated, former Wall Street vice president. She would not comment on what was in the letter except to say “enough to figure out an affair was going on.”

As an infidelity expert frequently called on by the media to comment on infidelity issues in the news, I would like to share the following insights on the Sanford Affair:

The Sanford affair highlights the danger of opposite sex friendships and how they can undermine a marriage. Most people underestimate the danger of close friendships with members of the opposite sex, because they start innocently, and initially, no sex involved. Very often, the person involved in this type of friendship does not realize how much of a threat it can be to his or her marriage or relationship. If the situation is not put into check, these friendships form strong bonds that progress to emotional infidelity, and eventually lead to sexual infidelity. Many people assume that Mark Sandford WANTS to make his marriage work. Well, to profess your love for your mistress and to lie to your wife about your whereabouts clearly signals that his priority is the mistress and NOT his wife and 4 sons. Jenny Sandford shouldn’t even give him a choice…
