A number of years ago, I overheard a New York City police officer who was retiring for reasons of health being asked the question, “What is the biggest regret of your career?” His answer:

“My biggest regret is that I never killed a ni**er.”

He was actually in a public place when he uttered those words. I am thankful that he’s not on the force anymore, too.

This comment cracks me up – how lame a statement, but I guess when you are caught dead-to-rights in a mental breakdown of hate and bigotry and sending your thoughts out to the world – there’s not much else a lawyer can say in his client’s defense. Maybe he can plead “diminished capacity”, as it seems this soon to be former cop’s less than human actions have short-circuited his life and ruined his career. For some reason, this seems like something someone would do if under the influence of alcohol or drugs – I have a hard time believing these rants would come from someone in a sane frame of mind… Maybe the “rehab route”, like so many celebrities who screw up, would be the route to get him out of the deep hole he is now in. Whatever the outcome, cops like this have no place on a city’s payroll – Intensive therapy for his deep-seated hate and anger issues is more the place for him.
