Remains of U.S. Pilot Shot Down in Iraq in 1991 Gulf War Recovered

(ChattahBox) — The first American lost in the Persian Gulf War, Capt. Michael “Scott” Speicher was have been found in Iraq, the military said Sunday. Speicher’s F/A-18 Hornet was shot down in the opening hours of the first Gulf War over west-central Iraq on January 17th, 1991 during Operation Desert Storm.
His fate remained a mystery for years, with some believing that the pilot was being held prisoner by then Iraqi president Saddam Hussein. Apparently he did not survive hus crash and was buried by Bedouins shortly after he was shot down. An Iraqi citizen helped the U.S. locate his remains from a desert grave at the crash site in July and flew them to the United States where they have now been positively identified using dental records.
