Freed US journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee Reveal Details on North Korean Capture

September 2, 2009

(ChattahBox) — The American journalists who were arrested/kidnapped and imprisoned in North Korea and finally freed after spending nearly five months in captivity with the help of former President Bill Clinton are telling their story in a statement on Current TV. Current TV journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee say they had a Korean Chinese guide who brought them to the Tumen River, a well known trafficking route so the women could document how smuggling operations worked. Once they arrived at their destination, the women saw no signs marking the border and the guide reassured them he could show them the area where human traffickers pay off guards to move freely from one country to the other. They crossed from China into North Korea for less than one minute under their guides urgency but realizing the danger they were putting themselves in, began to withdraw. As they returned, however, a pair of armed North Korean soldiers chased them on foot. “We were firmly back inside China when the soldiers apprehended us,” they write. “We tried with all our might to cling to bushes, ground, anything that would keep us on Chinese soil, but we were no match for the determined soldiers. They violently dragged us back…” and were taken into custody on Mar. 17.  The guide, and the women’s producer, Mitch Koss outran the guards and got away safely.

The women were not prepared to share details of their captivity because “…the psychological wounds of imprisonment are slow to heal.  But they did indicate that at the beginning of their confinement, the pair “furtively destroyed evidence” by swallowing their notes and damaging videotapes, hoping to protect their sources during interrogations. They hope to now redirect interest in their story, on what they were their to report on, a story about despairing North Korean defectors who flee to China only to find themselves living a different kind of horror. We hope that now, more than ever, the plight of these people and of the aid groups helping them are not forgotten.”

China was once the most civilized nation on Earth. That was 4,000 years ago, however; now, China and the client State of North Korea live in a strange mix of barbarism and modern comforts (but only for some).
