Bigoted Mob Heckles Spanish Bishop, Cancer Victim at Town Hall

(ChattahBox)—What has happened to our country? All the ugly hate, bigotry, racism and violence that has always simmered in the underbelly of America has been unleashed upon us, like the evils of mankind spewing from Pandora’s box. And once the naked hostility and evil escapes, unrestrained by voices of reason, it’s near impossible to lock it up again.

Yet another health care town hall was disrupted by hysterical, violent and ignorant thuggery this past week. This time the shameful underbelly of America, lately referred to as teabaggers, disrupted a town hall event held by Rep. Jim Himes (CT-04) on Sept. 2, in Norwalk, CT.

During the meeting, a Spanish clergyman, Stamford CT. Bishop Emilio Alvarez, asked permission to speak in Spanish, knowing that Rep. Himes was well versed in the language. Rep. Himes was born to American parents, in Peru, while his father worked for UNICEF.

As soon as the Bishop began to speak in Spanish, xenophobia, naked hate, bigotry and racism began to spew forth from a small vocal minority of anti-health reform protesters. They shouted the Bishop down saying No! And began chanting, “English, English, English!” In between chanting English! the racist thugs loudly booed.

The whole time, Bishop Alvarez stood proudly and politely, in a distinct counterpoint to the vocal violence surrounding him, dressed professionally in a suit and tie, and asked his question of the Congressman. The Bishop told his story of his wife losing her job and with it, the family’s health insurance.

He wondered aloud how is it, that we live in a world where people lose health care when they lose their jobs.

As Congressman Himes relayed the Bishop’s question to the crowd, more loud boos ensued, with one woman shouting, “He ought to speak English!”

The violent racism and bigotry directed towards Bishop Alvarez wasn’t an isolated incident that evening. The angry and hate-filled mob also shouted down and booed a cancer victim and a doctor telling of his frustration in trying to properly treat sick people who have no health insurance.

Just a few days ago, another violent and ignorant mob shouted down a woman in a wheelchair at a New Jersey town hall held by Congressman Frank Pallone. One of the loudest and meanest looking hecklers later said, that he didn’t come to the meeting to listen to other people’s opinions.

And then he lamented the fact that a woman in a wheelchair has more rights than he does. The Angry looking man, along with the rest of the violent mob, came to the town hall meeting with only one goal in mind; to disrupt the Democratic process and harass anyone who did not share his prejudice and ignorance.

The angry crowd hurled vile insults towards Rep.Pallone saying, that he should have been aborted and that he was a domestic terrorist. How does one begin to explain such naked hate and hostility?

Is all the hate and anger really all about opposition to health care reform, or is it about something else? Are these violent mobs using health care reform as an excuse to express their fear and anger over the election of our first Black President?

Whatever the cause, it’s truly ugly and frightening and a good portion of the blame can be attributed to Republican leaders who condone and enable the hate and anger for their own purposes to oppose President Obama.

Together with a steady drumbeat of hate, racism, falsehoods and conspiracy theories from Fox News and the likes of Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity, a small but very loud minority of extremists have taken over the public discourse with the help of the media.

Joe Klein columnist for Time Magazine, recently attended a town hall and was appalled by the hate and ignorance he witnessed there.

“The amazing thing remains not only the unwillingness of responsible Republicans–a term that is in danger of becoming an oxymoron–to call bull– on this, but also the willingness of many prominent Republicans to join in the slinging of garbage,” wrote Klein.

Klein perfectly encapsulated the ugly climate we suddenly find our nation in:

“Could I just say that the intensity of this getting pretty scary…and dangerous? We are heading toward a cliff and the usual brakes of civil discourse are not working.”

“I’m usually not one to panic or be overly worried about the state of our country–even when we do awful things like invade Iraq and torture people, we usually right our course before long–but I have a sinking feeling about where we’re headed now. I hope I’m wrong,” lamented Klein.

We can perhaps take comfort from the fact that when Pandora unleashed evil and hate into the world, hope was left behind.

What has happened is that we’ve had 8 years of “leadership” by bigoted fascists who presented an example to the stupid, and taught them that intolerance and ignoring the Constitution is OK.

The good news is that the morons are now telling the rest of us who we are. Thye certainly make “Death Panels” look like a good idea, don’t they?

Actually the myth states that the last thing to come out of Pandora’s box was false hope. What we are experiencing is a failure of our civilization. Comforting ourselves with false hope is the last thing we need. We need to see these violent bigoted folks for what they are – the future, unless we take strong action. They need to be exposed and condemned. We need to improve our system of education to so that ethics and critical thinking be taught alongside reading and math.

We need to develop a national sense of shame because we have failed as a people to live up to our national potential. If we fail, we will become a nation of cowards and thugs.

15 pages on Google… You lefty’s better milk this for all it’s worth.

And for the record the outcry wasn’t about racism, or bigotry, it was about a man sent to insult the essentially conservative population by staging a performance designed to incite outrage.

The the Dems who conceived of the plan I tip my hat and I concede the insult was executed flawlessly, and the result you obtained fit your expectations perfectly I’m sure.

What I feel is important to point out is that you don’t fight fair… then again why should you, it’s not about the conflict, it’s about control. Someday when your followers learn to respect reason and critical thought we shall win. Bu in the mean time I expect you will continue to destroy the fabric of the nation and weaken the minds of the coming generations.

Remember, “Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose.” And someday you will take away so much from us that value freedom and liberty that we will rise up in ways that you cannot understand, and you will be swept away. The pendulum may be broken and puller hard to the left for now, but it will eventually swing back, and you and your progressive attitudes will be swept away.

    CTYankee,

Listen to yourself. What you’re basically saying is: If we don’t side with you, you will eventually go after us. Thank you my friend, for confirming your primal majesty. Since when is progress evil and since when has conservatism gone so paranoid, bigot, and ignorant? Oh yeah, coz AM radio says so. With your statements above, the progressives and the many-moderates-who-definitely-won’t-vote-for-crazy rest their case.

Since when is progress evil and since when has conservatism gone so paranoid, bigot, and ignorant? I guess it’s a good rebranded word for the intolerance and bigotry. You talk about respect? What about respect for the man who was at that time being yielded the floor? The only time you walk like you talk is when you want it for yourselves. With your statements above, the progressives and the many-moderates-who-definitely-won’t-vote-for-crazy rest their case.
