Regular Violations By Pollutants In US Water Supply Often Ignored

September 13, 2009

US (ChattahBox) – A story in the New York Times has underlined the criminal behavior of many polluters that are doing more than hurting the environment, they are also causing a great deal of human suffering.

One story brought up was that of a West Virginia family living close to the capitol. Their children have been burned and covered in scabs after coming into contact with the bath water that ran from their taps.

They have had to get various caps on their teeth where chemicals in the drinking water ate away at the enamel and weakened their teeth.

Residents of the area have to buy lotions meant to treat chemical burns because of the condition of the water that goes into their houses.

Tests on that water have shown that it contains lead, arsenic, and other deadly chemicals in the main water supply.

These have been caused by dumps from corporations that seem quite capable of getting away with it.

This is despite the Clean Water Act, which prohibits companies from secretly dumping chemicals, and requires all chemicals to be reported when waste is disposed. This law has been violated over 500,000 times in half a decade.

So, why isn’t someone doing something about it?

Water pollution is a nationwide problem, effecting over 19 million Americans every year, who end up with serious illnesses such as cancer, infections, and kidney failure.

“The E.P.A. and states have completely dropped the ball. Without oversight and enforcement, companies will use our lakes and rivers as dumping grounds — and that’s exactly what is apparently going on,” James L. Oberstar (D-MN) was quoted as saying.

In many cases, these businesses and offenders are not even fined, leaving them open to continue committing these atrocities that devastate millions.

Disgusting.
