Va. wants convicted DC sniper John Allen Muhammad executed in November

September 13, 2009

(ChattahBox) — If Virginia prosecutors have their way, sniper mastermind John Allen Muhammad will be executed Nov. 9., seven years after he terrorized a city and a nation already reeling from the 9/11 and anthrax attacks. A prosecutor requested the execution date in a letter sent on Wednesday to Prince William Circuit Court in Manassas. CNN reports that date was chosen to make sure the governor would be available for clemency petition Muhammad may pursue. Muhammad, 48, went on a seemingly random spree of violence over a three-week span in October 2002 with his young protege, Lee Boyd Malvo, using a high-powered rifle to shoot 13 people, 10 of whom died, in the Washington, D.C. area. It was later learned that the rampage had apparently begun the month before with murders and robbery in Louisiana and Alabama, which had resulted in three deaths. Muhammad was sentenced to death for the slaying of Dean Meyers, one of 10 people shot to death, while Malvo, also remains in jail for life.
