Boehner Caught Falsely Claiming he ‘Didn’t Call’ Obama a Socialist

September 20, 2009

(ChattahBox)—John Boehner (R-Ohio), the House Minority Leader, appeared on Meet The Press with David Gregory on Sunday, where he not only admitted that President Obama was not a Socialist, after much prodding, but then falsely claimed that he never called the President a Socialist.

It seems Rep. Boehner forget about a little search engine tool, called Google. Rep. Boehner has suggested that President Obama is a Socialist on at least two occasions.

During his appearance on Meet The Press, David Gregory brought up RNC Chairman Michael Steel’s recent fundraising appeal, which said that President Obama and the Democrats are attempting a “socialist power grab.” Gregory asked Boehner if the use of that language was appropriate and Boehner, at first avoided the question and answered by accusing Obama of “scaring the American public.”

When prodded by Gregory to say definitively whether Boehner believed Obama was a Socialist, Boehner finally answered, “No.” Boehner then went on to falsely claim that he never called President Obama’s policies Socialism:

GREGORY: “Do you really think the President is a socialist?

BOEHNER: Listen, when you begin to look at how much they want to grow government, you can call it whatever you want, but the fact is —

GREGORY: What do you call it though?

BOEHNER: This is unsustainable. We’re broke.

GREGORY: That’s fine. Do you think the President is a socialist?

BOEHNER: No!

GREGORY: Okay. Because the head of the Republican Party is calling it that.

BOEHNER: Listen, I didn’t call it that, and I’m not going to call it that.”

In February 28, 2009, during Boehner’s speech to conservatives at the CPAC, he accused President Obama and the Democrats of taking the path to Socialism by passing the economic stimulus plan:

“Well, the stimulus, the omnibus, the budget — it’s all one big down payment on a new American socialist experiment. … All of these bills seek to replace our economic freedom with the whims and mandates of politicians and bureaucrats,” said Boehner.

In addition to his CPAC speech, on October 7, 2008, Boehner was the keynote speaker for the Georgia GOP’s Victory Dinner, where he referred to a possible Democratic Obama Presidency as Socialist:

“You want to talk about socialism. You put these people in office, it’s batten down the hatches and watch out.”

As noted by Think Progress, Boehner was not only caught in a lie, but he essentially admitted “…that all he was doing there was fear-mongering and attempting to scare the public for political gain.”

Where was Gregory’s exposition of Boehner’s lie? Every time some “journalist” allows a lie to sit unchallenged by the truth, another seed of fantastic alternative reality is sown. Thank you ChattaBox. Screw you NBC.
