Three Men Charged in Alleged Terror Plot

September 20, 2009

(ChattahBox) — Federal agents have charged three men (a Denver-area airport shuttle driver, his father and another man late Saturday) in a terror probe which reaches from Colorado to New York all the way back to Pakistan. Najibullah Zazi, 24, an Afghan national, was arrested with his father Wali Mohammed Zazi, 53, outside of Denver. An acquaintance of the two men, Ahmad Wais Afzali, 37, who is from Flushing, New York, was also arrested. Zazi is charged with making false statements to federal agents in an ongoing terror investigation, and supporting documents contend the man admitted receiving weapons and explosives training from al-Qaida in Pakistan. Zazi’s father and the alleged associate, Afzali, are charged with making false statements to federal agents, a charge that carries a penalty of eight years in prison.

Officials are investigating several other people in the United States, Pakistan and elsewhere tied to this plot believed related to detonating an improvised possibly hydrogen peroxide-based explosive device(s) in the United States. The plot may have involved a major transportation center a source told CNN, while ABCNews.com says a computer belonging to Zazi showed he had researched baseball and football stadiums and sites used in the recent Fashion Week event in New York City, according to law enforcement officials.
