Caught Escaped Mental Patient Tricked Friend Into Helping Him Leave Town

September 21, 2009

Washington (ChattahBox) – Phillip Arnold Paul, the convicted killer who escaped from a mental hospital during a field trip to a county fair last week, was captured yesterday after trying to thumb a ride from a local.

Paul had apparently tried to hitchhike, and the person he tried to thumb down alerted authorities to his location. He was recaptured shortly after.

Authorities are saying that the escaped killer had been lying to a friend for several months, saying that he was set to be released. He went directly to this friend’s house after ditching his rather pathetic chaperones. He was given a guitar, a leather jacket, and a sleeping bag, before being driven out of town.

It wasn’t until Saturday that the friend learned of the truth, and contacted police to show them where he had dropped his friend off.

When found, Paul had a hand scythe in his bag, but didn’t try to use it. Police are unsure of what he had planned to do with it.

Paul was initially charged with murdering an elderly woman and covering her body with gasoline to hide her scent from search dogs. He was found to be mentally ill, after telling police that he had been told by voices in her head that she was a witch and had to be destroyed.

He has escaped once before, also on a field trip in 1991, from the same hospital. He knocked out a police officer during that recapture, and was charged with the escape attempt, and second degree assault on an officer.

It is unclear as to why the caretakers for the mental facility he is a part of continue to give him little trips out as a murdering flight risk, but the state and authorities are now determined to find out.

All field trips for patients convicted of criminal activity have been halted in the region.
