Woman Gives Up Baby In Embryo Switch

September 26, 2009

US (ChattahBox) – A woman who had IVF to conceive a child was impregnated with the wrong embryo, and gave birth to another couple’s baby boy.

Carolyn Savage had undergone the IVF at an unnamed clinic, but a mix-up meant that she ended up with another couple’s child.

The doctor called to explain the situation 10 days after the procedure, telling her that she was pregnant, but that the clinic had made a terrible mistake.

“I don’t think I’ve ever cried so much in my life,” Savage was quoted by CNN.

“It was such a nightmare and, in a way, I felt violated.”

She and her husband chose that day to continue with the pregnancy, and to hand the baby over to his rightful parents after the birth.

She gave birth Friday, and the other couple now has a new baby son, a bittersweet moment for the Savages, according to a statement released to the press.

“Our family is deeply grateful for the support and prayers of so many people from around the world. We also would like to thank the medical professionals who provided superior care and treatment throughout the pregnancy and delivery.”

Oh my goodness, I can’t imagine how difficult that would be! Did the other couple get impregnated with the first couple’s baby too? Are they going to switch? Or was it just the one couple who went through a whole pregnancy just to give up the baby? How sad.

Shannon – It was just the one woman, not a double pregnancy. It is certainly tragic…I cannot even begin to imagine how painful it would be to go through the whole thing after struggling to become pregnant for as long as they must have to try IVF, and then having to give the child up.
