Chicago Eliminated as Olympic Site in First Round of Voting

October 2, 2009

(ChattahBox)—Despite a personal appearance by President Barack Obama and First Lady, Michelle, Chicago lost its bid to host the 2016 Summer Games in the first round of voting, with Tokyo losing out in the second round.

Both the President and Michelle Obama gave rousing speeches before the International Olympic Committee in Copenhagen. And they were joined by a delegation of former Olympic athletes, business leaders and politicians, whom all did their part to present Chicago, as a likely host city, to no avail.

Hundreds of people waited in a downtown Chicago plaza, awaiting the news, expecting it to be positive. When the news came that their beloved Windy City was eliminated in the first round, there were gasps and tears from the crowd.

Chicago was considered a huge favorite and it was hoped that a personal appeal from the President of the United States, supporting his home town, would tip the decision in Chicago’s favor.
