Steve Schmidt Says Palin As GOP Nominee Would Be ‘Catastrophic’

October 2, 2009

US (ChattahBox) – Steve Schmidt had some rather blunt opinions about Sarah Palin as a possible GOP nominee for the 2012 election, and they weren’t particularly flattering for Mrs. Palin.

The former strategist was not happy about Palin as the Vice President pick, and the conflict between the former governor and McCain’s campaigning group was not a secret by the time President Obama took the White House.

But Schmidt’s lack of confidence in Palin apparently does end with the results.

“I think that she has talents, but my honest view is that she would not be a winning candidate for the Republican Party in 2012, and in fact, were she to be the nominee, we would have a catastrophic election result,” he was quoted in First Draft of History.
“In the year since the election has ended, she has done nothing to expand her appeal beyond the base … The independent vote is going to be up for grabs in 2012. That middle of the electorate is going to be determinative of the outcome of the elections. I just don’t see that if you look at the things she has done over the year… that she is going to expand that base in the middle.”
He is not the first to express doubts as to the wisdom of putting Palin in the spotlight as the GOP domination. While she has her share of fans, it is believed that she was a fair bit fo the reason that McCain lost to Obama in the last election.
But maybe the governor-turned-keyspeaker will prove everyone wrong, make it in, and then win the votes. Then again, probably not.
